The Lost Love Letter to a Small Town
About Nathan
The Ottawa Citizen's Patrick Langston praised Nathan's first solo album, No Wicked for the Rest, as “a smart blend of folk, bluegrass and country that segues nicely from tracks about power and greed to more intimate tunes about love and its struggle to survive in a cock-eyed world.”
His latest solo project is a lot less about struggle and a lot more about love and gratitude – a nine-song tribute to what Nathan calls “the collage of open-hearted dreamers who grew me up in the artistic lair of 1970s Elora, Ontario, and the many more I’ve met in other small towns along the way.”
With Nathan’s honey-bourbon voice, iconic acoustic guitars and well-honed story songs front and centre, The Lost Love Letter to a Small Town is a songwriter's carousel that makes stops at dance halls, cedar-lined fields and limestone quarries.
There's a reckoning between whiskey-loving rounders and teetotalling temperance ladies, a full-on six-string seduction scene, a swinging end-times groove with an Oxfords sliding septuagenarian charmer, and a road trip daydream with a tireless cafe owner who blends live music with her crepes and cappuccinos.
As you visit with these characters, you'll hear lyrical nods to Nathan's singer-songwriter heroes including John Prine, Joni Mitchell, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Blaze Foley, Townes Van Zandt and Gram Parsons.
Invite The Lost Love Letter to a Small Town into your life, then go out and celebrate the beautiful souls who make magic happen in small towns everywhere.
When he's not singing about small towns as a solo artist, Nathan plays in two small town bands: The Ragged Flowers, a neo-psychedelic folk rock outfit he co-founded, and The Maywoods - devoted to the music of John Prine.
"The people I'm drawn to most are the dreamers. Let these seekers into your imagination, and you're forever young."
Inspiration
At the age of 16, Nathan walked into a recording studio called Elora Sound as part of a high school punk trio. The mission – to create and perform original music. 45 years, many bands, recordings, cafes, barrooms and festival stages later, he’s still at it.
The answer to the "How come?" question is simple. "The people I'm drawn to most are the dreamers. The uncompromising originals who always find a way to do their thing, and who encourage kids like I was to do our thing. Let them into your imagination, and you're forever young."
If you've never lived in a weird little town of beautiful souls who nurture each other, The Lost Love Letter to a Small Town is your chance to visit. And if you're lucky enough to make your life in a small town you love, these songs offer a chance to ignite new human dimension and connection.
"We knew it was a singer-songwriter collection of story songs ... What we didn't know was the magic that would happen during our three days together."
